4 Power User Tips for QuickTime Player on Mac

Many Mac users might have noticed the QuickTime Player app in one of the Mac folders. However, most people rarely use this app because of the perception they have towards it. They think it is just a video playback application and they couldn’t be wrong!

However, QuickTime Player is a very useful app to use on which users can perform many functions. This article will be taking a detailed look into four power user tips for your QuickTime Player on Mac.

1. Record your favorite video or audio

QuickTime Player on Mac can help record videos or audios. The app provides you with three options to perform this task. The list includes ‘New Movie Recording’, ‘New Audio Recording’, and ‘New Screen Recording’. To see these options, users will have to navigate to the ‘File’. They should choose an input source and quality before proceeding ahead by clicking the record button denoted in red color to record both movie and audio.

The third option allows you to record the screen in two ways. Either you can record the entire screen, or you can record a specific area of the screen. After clicking the red button to record, the button will be denoted as a black one. Once done, you will have to click on the record button to stop the recording. To save the file, users will have to click File and then Save. Once the saving process is completed, you can watch the video, audio, or screen recording in it.

2. Watch a clip either by rotating or flipping

Every person feels comfortable in their ways while watching a video or screen recording. For example, for one user, it is ok to watch with the rotation off. But for another user, they wish to watch a video either by rotating it or flipping it horizontally or vertically. All this can be done using a QuickTime Player.

In the Edit menu of the app, a user is provided with four options, out of which a user can choose the option of their choice. The options are;

  • Rotate Left
  • Rotate Right
  • Flip Horizontal
  • Flip Vertical

Even though rotating pictures is common among other apps, flipping or rotating a video is a unique feature that makes QuickTime Player a unique application.

3. Splitting a Video Clip

It allows the user to split a video clip into two or more clips and combine multiple video clips into one. The first step you should do is select ‘View’ and then click on the option denoted as ‘Show Clips’. Next, you should drag the QuickTime Player play head towards the spot where you want the video split into two. Once done, select ‘Edit’ and choose the option denoted as ‘Split Clip’. Both the video clips that have been split can be viewed in yellow color.

There could be scenarios in which the video you want to split into two is in MOV format. With the increase in popularity of MP4 files, the MOV format decreased significantly due to the high failure rates while playing the videos. In such cases, the video or movie won’t play. Therefore, it is a good idea to convert such videos to MP4.

4. Easily Export and Share the File

Once the user completes the editing of the video or audio being recorded, a user can easily export the file by navigating to ‘File’ and clicking the option denoted as ‘Export’. You will be provided with various resolution options to choose from, ranging from 480p to 1080p. Furthermore, you will also be provided with options to choose settings for iOS devices and Apple TV.

You can also export the file in ‘audio only’ format. It is quite different from iTunes, which sends the file directly to the iTunes library even though they offer the same iOS and Apple TV optimized settings.

To share a file, choose ‘File’ and then ‘Share’, and you will be provided with many options to do so using Mail, Messages, and various other social media platforms. Next, select the desired medium through which you want to share the video or audio file, and let QuickTime Player optimize the file for the particular format.

You can also easily save the changes being made to the video file by selecting ‘File’ and clicking the ‘Close’ button, which will prompt you to rename the newly edited video file. Provide a new name and click the ‘Save’ button, and your file will be saved.
